Who wants to know my absolute favorite part of all NieR canon?
It’s revealed through supplemental materials that the original game takes place in what was once Japan. Automata’s setting is a bit more ambiguous, but there’s some pretty strong in-game evidence supporting that it’s in Japan as well, such as the aerial battles over the Pacific.
However, there is a Japan-only stage play about A2 and Anemone′s past, and its setting is the Hawaiian island of Oahu. If you’ve finished the game, you know how that turned out. Suffice to say, nobody was exactly helping them get off the island. No flight units, no transporters, and probably nothing that could make a decent enough boat. And yet there they are in Automata, same place as everyone else.
One can only conclude that A2 and Anemone, completely independent of each other, both swam to Japan.
