In the movie American Psycho, Christian Bale based the main character on a Letterman interview featuring Tom Cruise in 1999. When asked about the inspiration behind Patrick Bateman, he replied:
“Tom Cruise on David Letterman had this very intense friendliness with nothing behind the eyes.”
“Welcome to the bone zone.” I say seductively, providing a charming wink and smile to my date as I open the door to the unlit shed.
They blush, obviously charmed, and smile back before walking into the dark of the shed. They are expecting a moment of passion. I have other plans.
I walk up to them, shutting the door behind me. They go to embrace me but I reach over to turn the light on, illuminating the various saws and animal bones scattered throughout the room. Skulls hang on the walls, watching. There is a pile of rocks in the corner. My date is horrified.
“It’s called the bone zone because it’s full of bones.” I explain, picking up a large buck skull. “This one’s name is George.”
My date can only watch in silent horror as I begin introducing them to each and every skull I own, all lovingly named. Just when they think it’s over, I begin to introduce them to my rocks.
