1. all human languages are equally rule-governed. this includes california english just as much as it includes latin just as much as it includes thai, xhosa, welsh
2. prescriptive grammarians have never once been correct about WHAT those rules are governing the languages. prescriptivism is a political project of using language hygiene to systematically exclude, silence, and oppress people they don’t like by claiming that they “talk wrong.” the varieties disliked by prescriptivists are almost always those spoken by people who are already minoritized or oppressed in some other way – the language thing is an excuse, and a shoddy one at that
3. there is no way to “talk wrong.”
