When I was 8 or 9 I really really wanted a charm bracelet, so my dad’s second wife bought me one and took me out to pick out charms. I wanted a rainbow charm because rainbows are pretty, y’know? But she looked at it, took it from me, and went to interrogate some poor cashier about whether it was just a rainbow or if it had a “hidden meaning”.

At the time I didn’t even know about pride or the rainbow flag or really even that being gay was a thing. I was very confused about why I couldn’t have a rainbow charm.
