Sure it is. It wouldn’t be appropriate in the core Mario series, true enough, but Paper Mario isn’t part of the core Mario series – it’s part of the side-series that started with Super Mario RPG, which has had snarkily self-aware writing ever since, well, Super Mario RPG.
